How is biological age actually determined?

Four methods are used in practice. Epigenetic clocks read DNA methylation patterns across thousands of sites and are currently the best-validated approach. Telomere length analysis measures the protective caps on your chromosomes. Blood biomarker panels combine markers such as inflammation, glucose regulation and organ function into a composite score. Functional assessments measure grip strength, VO2 max and similar physical capacity. BIOAGE uses a biomarker-based score from a blood or saliva sample; EPISPAN uses epigenetic methylation analysis.

Are free online biological age calculators accurate?

They measure nothing. A free calculator asks about your diet, exercise, smoking and sleep, then applies population averages to your answers — it is a structured questionnaire, not a test. It can be useful for thinking about your habits, but two people giving identical answers can have very different cellular ages and the calculator cannot tell them apart. A laboratory test reads your own biology instead of a population average.
