What the Research Shows

These references are about the tests themselves: when a result becomes reliable, how sensitive a sample is, and how often an infection carries no symptom at all. Each is stated with the measured figure and its confidence interval.

1. Comparing 20 FDA-approved immunoassays against seroconversion panels, estimated window periods ranged from 5.9 to 24.8 days depending on the test. For laboratory antigen/antibody (fourth-generation) assays the median was 18 days, with an interquartile range of 13 to 24 days, and 99% of infections were detectable by day 44.

2. Across 21 studies and more than 6,100 paired samples, nucleic acid amplification testing of self-collected vaginal swabs reached 92% sensitivity (95% CI 87–95) and 98% specificity (95% CI 97–99) against clinician-collected cervical swabs for chlamydia. In men, self-collected urine reached 88% sensitivity (95% CI 83–93) against clinician-collected urethral samples.

3. Pooling 48 studies of women in low- and middle-income countries, 60.7% of chlamydia infections (95% CI 50.4–70.5), 53.3% of gonorrhoea infections (95% CI 37.1–69.1) and 56.9% of trichomoniasis infections (95% CI 44.6–68.9) carried no symptom.
